Parts formed from metal powders

It's well known to us all that the manufacture of ceramics by forming clay into shapes and then heating it to make it hard and durable is one of the first technologies developed by man. However, it may surprise you to hear that almost five thousand years ago the Egyptians devised an analogous method of producing metal parts, whilst in India a powder-formed and sintered metal part made of iron and weighing over 5 tons was produced around 300AD.

The manufacture of metal powders became more commonplace around the beginning of the 20th century, and mass produced powder-metal engineering components began to replace cast or forged components in many applications.

Why use Powder Metal technology today?

AAM Ltd is the UK agent for Metco Industries Inc, who are situated in Pennsylvania, USA and make a wide variety of die-compacted parts in batches of medium to large quantity, for the automotive, lawn and garden tool and many other industries. The materials they supply are either copper alloys (various types of brass or bronze) or else iron alloys (steel, alloyed steel, infiltrated steel) and these ferrous alloys can be supplied in a variety of heat treatment conditions and can also be plated. All parts can either be supplied in the shape that was formed in the press, or else can be machined as may be needed either for extra precision or else to form undercuts or tapped holes or other features in the third dimension.
